WHERE YOUR STROKES GO · LESSON 6 OF 7

When driver stays in the bag

You will know the few holes where leaving driver in the bag is worth the yards.

VIDEO · 3 MINWhen driver stays in the bagThe video lands here. The lesson is below in full.

A scratch golfer hits 48% of his fairways with driver. A 15 handicap hits 47% (Shot Scope data via MyGolfSpy, 2025). Fairways barely change from scratch to a 25 handicap. What changes is how bad the miss is.

Arccos counts tee shots that end in a penalty or a punch out. For scratch, 12% of them. For a 10 handicap, 23%. For a 20, 33% (Arccos, 2025). And you know from lesson 4 what a penalty does: in our app, holes with a penalty went double or worse 72% of the time.

So the question on the tee was never "can I hit this fairway?" It is "does my normal miss reach a penalty?"

The Penalty Test

Driver is the default. On every tee, ask one question: does my normal miss reach a penalty from here? Water, out of bounds, a lost ball in the junk.

If the answer is no, hit driver. The rough is not a penalty. A punch out is not a penalty. If the answer is yes, take the club whose normal miss does not reach it. Count them on your course. It is usually fewer holes than you think.

Scott Fawcett's DECADE system teaches the same default: "The first selection off the tee should be driver," and there needs to be "a very good reason not to hit driver" (Golf Digest, 2024). I played college golf on DECADE. It was built on Tour data. This starts from your last 3 scorecards.

Why 3 wood is not the safe play

Across all golfers, driver finds 45.5% of fairways and 3 wood finds 46.4%, and the 3 wood is 12 yards shorter (Arccos, 2025). At a 15 handicap the penalty rate was 2% with driver and 5% with 3 wood (Shot Scope data via MyGolfSpy, 2025). At a 10 and a 20, the 3 wood found 2 to 3 points more fairways. So on accuracy the two clubs are close. On distance they are not.

And the yards matter more than the fairway. Lou Stagner's chart for a 10 handicap: 160 yards out in the fairway scores the same as 140 yards out in the rough (Golf Digest, 2025). A fairway is worth about 20 yards. A 3 wood costs 12 to 20 yards on every tee shot to buy a fairway or two a round. Arccos said it plainly in 2022: the loss "isn't worth 2% more of fairways hit."

Closer is better. A golfer who shoots in the 90s averages 2.9 strokes to hole out from 30 yards in the fairway and 3.4 from 80 (Broadie's tables). Fifty yards closer is half a shot.

Your normal miss

The test only works if you know your normal miss. Not your worst one. The one that shows up most. Casual rounds are for finding it. Hit driver when nothing is on the line and watch where it goes. Logged rounds make it a fact after three rounds. The 9 Hole Range Card from lesson 5 works too.

I learned mine the hard way. Final round of the 2021 national championship, 18th hole, out of bounds all the way down the left and the whole state of Florida to the right. I tried to cut one along the left side, and I double crossed it. That hole was never about the club. It was about where I aimed with a miss I already knew I had.

One exception

Some golfers have a Weak Window: a distance they score worse from than from farther back. If your own card shows one, lay up past it. But it has to be your card, not your feel. "I like 100 yards" is not a Weak Window. Mine in college was 100 to 125 yards. The stats said I was worse from there than from 125 to 150. I knew it from a number, not a feeling.

Your one action this week

Take a scorecard from your home course. Go through the 14 tee shots on par 4s and 5s. For each one, write where your normal miss would finish. Mark the holes where it reaches a penalty. Those are the holes where driver stays in the bag. The rest are driver. That works in January.
